Introduction

The West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP) is a leading organization in peacebuilding, conflict prevention, conflict transformation and mitigation in Africa. The mandate of WANEP is to build the capacity of peacebuilding, development and human rights practitioners as well as policy-makers, non-state actors and individuals in peace and security issues to promote and protect human security through context specific tools and indigenous techniques. To fulfill its mandate, WANEP holds each year, a three-week training session in peacebuilding at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) in Accra, Ghana.

Course Description

The three-week intensive training session organized by WANEP is the West Africa Peacebuilding Institute (WAPI). WAPI was established to provide specialized, intensive, and culturally sensitive training in conflict transformation and peacebuilding.  The training covers a range of courses on theories and practice of Peacebuilding; Dialogue and Mediation; Women and Gender Mainstreaming in Peacebuilding; Youth and Peace Education, Human Security and Peacebuilding, Early Warning and Early Response (Building community capacity for preventive peacebuilding).

Course Aim

The aim of WAPI is to provide specialized, intensive, and culturally sensitive training in conflict transformation and peacebuilding to individuals, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), Policymakers, and other relevant actors from West Africa and beyond.

Entry Requirements

• Individuals working in the field of peacebuilding, human rights, youth in peacebuilding, development, Gender; Academia; students.
• Policymakers, government officials, Intergovernmental organizations, corporate organizations and other relevant actors from West Africa and around the world.

Session I:  05^th - 09^th September

• Introduction to Peacebuilding Paradigms: Theories and Practice of Peacebuilding

• Dialogue and Mediation: Design and Processes

Session II:   12^th – 16^th September

• Youth and Peace Education

• Human Security  & Peacebuilding

Session III:   19^th – 23^rd September

• Early Warning and Early Response: Building Community Capacity for Preventive Peacebuilding

• Women & Gender Mainstreaming in Peacebuilding

• The costs for WAPI 2011 are as follows:

Each course costs USD 1000 (One Thousand US Dollars) including tuition, training materials, feeding and accommodation, and certification.

You can apply to a maximum of three courses with one course per session as courses in each session run concurrently.

• The course is residential and course participants will be accommodated at the KAIPTC residential facilities.
• Problem Based Learning (PBL) and facilitation are employed as teaching methods.
• Guest facilitators/presenters with field experiences will be invited to enrich the course content, if necessary.
