Interns at Ashoka work with professionals and entrepreneurs committed to supporting an influential civil society worldwide. Because we recognize that interns can be Ashoka's best ambassadors in their schools and communities, we strive to immerse interns in our most dynamic projects as well as our unique staff culture. Our goal is to give interns the opportunity to shape their own substantive responsibilities. As trusted members of the Ashoka team, interns are expected to demonstrate Ashoka's core values of applied empathy, entrepreneurship and collegiality, and commitment to innovation for the public.
Ashoka Arab World seeks committed and professional interns with whom we work to tailor an internship that fits our needs while considering their interests and level of experience. In this way, both Ashoka benefits from the interns' capabilities and the intern is able to pursue that which is most interesting to them. It is not uncommon for an intern to assist in several program areas.
The ideal interns will be graduate students and post-graduate students with some professional work and Arabic language experience.
Intern Activities and Responsibilities
We strive to give our interns meaningful tasks that are crucial to the further development of Ashoka Arab World and also help to develop our interns' professional skills and experience. The lack of strict hierarchy and the emphasis on innovation at Ashoka mean that quality ideas generated from any level of the organization have the potential to be implemented on a regional or even international level.
Although most interns will assist in more than one area, core responsibilities will be as follows:
Development- The Development Intern will assist the Development Officer in the creation of new partnerships and cementing of existing partnerships with private, public and citizen sector to strengthen Ashoka Support Network and create an "Everyone a Changemaker" society. The Development Intern will assist with research, and in creatively and professionally pursuing Ashoka Arab World's development strategy and 5-year plan. The Development Intern will gain substantive, hands-on experience in private sector-citizen sector partnerships, preparing proposals and offers, managing partnerships, strategic development and NGO operations.
Outreach- The Outreach Intern will assist the Outreach Officer in working with projects designed to encourage more citizen involvement in Ashoka, including university outreach and our Social Inclusion through Sports initiative. The Outreach Intern will gain substantive, hands-on experience in organizing and implementing outreach campaigns, developing strategies for reaching new target groups, and managing collaborative initiatives.
Media- The Media Intern will assist the Outreach and Development Officers in working with the media to raise awareness of Ashoka Arab World and the concept of social entrepreneurship in local and international media. S/he will be responsible for monitoring the news for stories relevant to AAW's work, drafting press releases and op-eds in response, updating our websites and blog, writing for and editing our monthly newsletter, and adding to our array of publications and design templates creatively and strategically. The Media Intern will gain substantive, hands-on experience in media relations, graphic design, and public affairs.
We also welcome volunteers who can provide consulting services (financial and otherwise), legal research/assistance, needs assessments, program assessments, fact-finding trips, non-profit managerial expertise, marketing development and many other services.
Internships are voluntary and all interns are responsible for their own travel, housing and other arrangements. Interns must also bring their own laptop. Because our interns are given a high degree of responsibility, we require a full-time commitment for a minimum of 3 months.
Interested candidates should submit a cover letter, resume and writing sample of no more than three pages.
