A Moment of Truth
«Sputnik moment»: in 1957, when Washington found the first artificial satellite in history, launched by the Russians, orbiting above its head, the shock was so great that the expression has remained in the language of the Americans. It marks the moment of an unwelcome truth. It marks the fear of those who unexpectedly discover that they are vulnerable, but also the signal that every energy has to be put into responding to the blow. It is the defeat from which a lesson is to be learnt. For the imperialist America of Obama, the new «Sputnik moment» is imperialist China in its turn, and the delay of industry revealed by the global crisis. Today the disproportion with Asia is such that there is no possible comparison with the past. This is a new strategic phase. There has never been such a huge shift in world power.
For the workers, too, under attack and with few defences against the crisis, this is a moment of truth. We need the right responses: reflection, organisation, conscious struggle, and internationalism. There’s work for everyone!
